Treatment abroad

Parents often have questions about treatments abroad. Because childhood cancer is rare, specialists worldwide collaborate and follow international treatment guidelines. This means that standard treatments in different countries are often similar and based on the latest scientific insights. Your child will receive the same treatment at the Máxima Center as they would in other countries.
Sometimes, a treatment is available abroad that is not offered in the Netherlands. This is usually part of a medical research study (clinical trial), meaning that researchers are still investigating whether the treatment is effective and safe. Do you want to know more? Discuss this with your treating physician. Your physician can guide you, weigh the pros and cons with you, and, if your child is eligible, contact the hospital abroad. They can also arrange for your child’s medical records to be sent. Whether a treatment abroad is reimbursed depends on your health insurance.

Crowdfunding
Are you considering crowdfunding to cover the costs? The Dutch Childhood Cancer Association (Vereniging Kinderkanker Nederland) offers advice, tips, and recommendations for reliable platforms but does not provide financial assistance.
