Tips for school

If you have a sick brother or sister, a lot can change in and around school. You might have to miss classes sometimes, or you might not be able to participate in other activities anymore. It's also not unusual for brothers and sisters to have trouble concentrating on lessons or homework.

  • Let your teacher know that your brother or sister is sick. If your teacher knows what is going on in your life, it is easier for them to help you.
  • Definitely try to confide in a friend so you can relieve your feelings.
  • You can also talk with a school counselor if you don't want to talk to your teacher.
  • Some brothers and sisters feel they want to explain the situation to their classmates, for example by giving a talk. The Princess Máxima Center has a presentation kit that you can use for this. The Dutch Childhood Cancer Association also has useful information on their website (in Dutch).
