Dutch PEWS

We keep a close eye on your child once admitted to the Princess Máxima Center so that we can act quickly should your child's condition deteriorate. We have a warning system in place for this: Dutch PEWS (Pediatric Early Warning Score System).

This warning system is two-fold:

  1. We measure important bodily functions, such as heart rate and breathing
  2. We monitor special circumstances, such as:
  • Parental unease
  • Concern of doctor or nurse
  • The treatment (operation, stem cell transplantation, medication)
The combined results determine in which category your child falls: green, orange or red. How closely your child is watched depends on the category color.

As a parent, you play an important part in the warning system. You know your child best and know what is normal and what is not, so we listen carefully to what you have to say and take your instincts seriously.

You can ask the doctor or nurse of the department for more information about the Dutch PEWS.
