Etoposide chemotherapy shortage resolved

Around August 16, the chemotherapy drug etoposide was difficult to obtain in Europe. Emergency consultations were held with the National Coordination Center for Medicines due to the shortage. The supply problem has since been resolved.

In mid-August, the Princess Máxima Center took immediate steps to use the drug as efficiently as possible. Contingency plans were also prepared for a possible shortage of etoposide for children. Their pediatric oncologist discussed the situation with parents and children. Fortunately, on August 30, it was announced that the shortage had been resolved through European agreements and new supplies to the Netherlands.

Drug shortages are not new and will continue to occur in the near future. All care for children with cancer is concentrated in the Máxima Center and our pharmacists and pediatric oncologists proactively participate in consultations on this issue. As a result, the importance of medicines for children with cancer is recognized nationwide.
