Measuring nausea

Pediatric nurse Els Haverkate has received a ZonMw grant to conduct research on instruments to measure nausea in children with cancer. She will spend 50% of her time over the next three years doing scientific research.

Els Haverkate: 'I am very happy that the grant has been awarded for setting up this line of research. The grant will allow me to devote 50% of my time to scientific nursing research for three years in addition to my work as a nurse in the Molen department. With this I want to improve the quality of care for children with cancer.'

‘Nurse listen to the voice of children to improve their comfort: a clinimetric validation study about nausea assessment tools’ is the title of Els Haverkate's research. It involves the validation of two measurement tools for nausea. Els: ‘There are two measurement tools, to better recognize nausea and achieve better treatment, the Pediatric Nausea Assessment Tool (PeNAT) and the Baxter Retching Faces (BARF) scale. From my previous research, children find both instruments good for indicating how nauseous they feel. The BARF instrument works with faces (smileys) which works well to determine the degree of nausea.' With the grant from ZonMw,

Els hopes to expand her research to a larger group of children. 'Eventually I hope to introduce a measuring instrument for nausea at the Máxima, just like the one for pain, for example. That way we can recognize nausea even better and treat it. Because this makes the care for children with cancer better,' said the new part-time nursing researcher.
