Jasmijn's story
Jasmijn had a hair work: 'I felt much more confident'.
Jasmijn (11) was treated at the Princess Máxima Center. When her hair started to fall out, she was put in touch with the Stichting Haarwensen (Hair Wishes Foundation). How did that work out? Jasmijn explains: ‘My hair? Nobody should touch my hair! My hair is very important to me. I always take care of my hair and I used to have very long hair. It was in 2022 that I became so ill that I had to go to the Princess Máxima Center. There were many examinations and information interviews. In those conversations, they told me what to expect. I had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery. What I thought was the worst part: that I would lose my hair because of the chemotherapy. When the announcement came that my hair would fall out, I was shocked. I immediately asked the doctor if there were any other medications for my disease that would keep my hair from falling out. I literally said: ‘You guys just make up some other way, but my hair is not going to fall out!’
Unfortunately, there was no other way. I knew for sure that (almost) no one should see me without my hair. It made me so sad when people made comments about me and how I looked. You don't do that, right? Then I got a hair work that looked exactly like my own hair. Only the hair was a little shorter. I had very long hair. The hair work made me feel a lot more confident. There was even someone who said: ‘How beautiful your hair looks!’ and that made me very happy.
Now I don't need any hair work, but I don't go to the hairdresser (yet). My hair is still very important to me. I am so happy that I can do all kinds of things with my own hair again.’
