Hematology-oncology

In the Hematology-oncology department, there is an integrated Stem Cell Transplantation Center (SCT center) which is a joint collaboration with the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital.

What diseases do we treat?

The Department

The Hematology-oncology department is on the third floor of the Princess Máxima Center and consists of outpatient clinics, a daycare unit and inpatient wards. A total of 30 rooms are available for children.

Outpatient Clinic

Consultations and physical check-ups take place at the outpatient clinic. When you arrive at the outpatient clinic, your child will be measured and weighed. We'll also measure blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. We take blood at the finger prick lab. Then you will have your consultation with the medical specialist or the nurse specialist. After the consultation, on the basis of the results and symptoms, you will move on to the day unit for chemotherapy, the OR for procedure or you can return home if no treatment is needed. There is also a treatment room at the outpatient clinic. There, the following procedures are performed:

accessing portal or central line
taking blood from the port or central line
care of the port/central line
insertion of nasogastric tubes

Outpatient treatment

Your child goes to the day unit for those parts of the treatment that can be doen in a day. Your child does not have spend the night in the hospital. If you are expected several days in succession, you have the option of staying in the Ronald McDonald house in Utrecht.

The day unit is equipped with treatment chairs and beds. There are also single rooms for children who need to be isolated.

Chemotherapy, blood transfusions and other medications are administered on the day unit. Your child also comes here for examinations under sedation such as MRI, CT and PET scans. Minor procedures, such as placing a port/central line (for medication administration and blood collection) and bone marrow punctures, lumbar punctures and bone biopsies are performed in specially equiped rooms on the day unit.

Inpatient wards

At the start of the treatment and for certain parts of the treatment (e.g. intensive chemotherapy) it will be necessary for your child to stay in hospital. The rooms on the wards are called parent-child units. These rooms have space for both you and your child. Through a sliding door, you can create your own space for a little privacy. You can spend the night and your room has separate shower facilities. There are ten special parent-child units available on the stem cell transplantation ward. These rooms are separated by a glass wall instead of a sliding door. You can visit your child via an air lock. All parent-child rooms have their own balcony. We strive to keep the duration of the admission as short as possible for the children.

Your child is our priority

At the Princess Máxima Center, we want to promote the normal development of your child as much as possible. We do this by trying to keep the stress on your child and yourself as low as possible, coordinating everything with you and communicating as well as possible. Our center was designed and decorated with this so-called development-oriented care as a starting point. In addition to the parent-child units, there are various facilities such as a teener lounge, a discovery corner, a theater, educational facilities and various gardens. Shared Care

The Princess Máxima Center works closely with regional Shared Care centers. The pediatric oncologists at the Princess Máxima Center make the diagnosis and the treatment plan and provide the complex care in our clinic. You can go to a hospital near your home for less complex care with your child. You will find all the information you need on this page.
